A WALK AROUND AIZPUTE 100 YEARS AGO AND TODAY
This virtual walk through one of the oldest towns in Kurzeme, whose name was first mentioned in written sources in 1253 due to the division of Kurzeme between its new lords - the Order of the Bishops of Courland and the Livonian Knights, is intended as a guide with both visual and informative information about The ancient and present days of the historical center of Aizpute (which was called Hasenpoth back in these days), with an emphasis on "once upon a time...", i.e. until the end of the first stage of Latvia's independence. Therefore, the 100 years mentioned in the title are quite conditional. However, the visual material - the oldest town postcards, photographs - is from the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century, so they were created about 100 years ago.
At the same time, this will be a virtual walk through pages of the book of Ivars Silārs and Varis Sants “Aizpute. Past and Present”, which is supplemented with new information where it was possible.
The guide uses mainly primary sources - Latvian State Historical Archive (LSHA) fund documents, as well as statistical materials and press publications of the respective time. My sincere thanks to Valda Kvaskova, the Leading Researcher of LSHA, for generously sharing her research materials. LET’S GO!.
